What You Need to Do to Make Your Online Degree Program Enjoyable

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

After studying online for say two to three months, some people are usually found losing interest in their eLearning programs. This makes them feel as if going back to school is just not meant for them and their enthusiasm for acquiring education simply dies out. In current times, numerous companies are spending hundreds and thousands of dollars to further educate their employees who had to give up on their academics to enter the job market. But, at times this effort goes to waste when employees start losing interest in their online education, making the entire academic journey a mere burden. Here are certain tips that can help such individuals maintain their interest and stay motivated towards their online degree programs at the same time:

Select Courses Which Interest You
What matters most is that you select an online degree program which is of interest to you. Do not select a course which you think might not hold your attention in the long run or does not hold much relevance to your current profession. You have to opt for an online degree program which would help you succeed professionally, or else the degree would be useless. After the selection of an online course, make efforts to learn things from the experience you hold in your industry. For example, you can take on case studies which you think might help you get to understand your industry better.

Keep Your Online Learning Sessions Short
Try not to stay online for too long. For example, you can keep half hour sessions and then take a break in between before heading back to your computer. This is important because stretching your online session too long makes it hard to maintain your interest. Make sure that you are comfortable with your pace of learning, and in turn you would make the most out of your online course. Long sessions usually lessen your curiosity and diminish your enthusiasm.

Remain Consistent
At times it is best to adhere to a certain schedule as it provides the discipline required to successfully accomplish a task. This just might also help in your online education schedule. What you need to do is take your career and your eLearning program seriously, which would help you earn your degree easily and achieve success in your profession upon graduation.

Several people lose interest in their online degree programs after a short while, but following the above mentioned tips would help them make their learning experience interesting and fun.

Challenges Posed by eLearning – It’s Not As Easy As You May Think!

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Online education is gaining popularity with each passing day, due to the numerous benefits associated with it. A research study presented by Sloan Consortium shows that nearly 3.2 million students across USA enrolled in online degree programs in the last couple of years.

But, just like anything in life, even online learning has certain challenges associated with it; challenges that do not exist in traditional learning. Every individual who is interested in enrolling in distance education programs must know about the differences between online and traditional classes, so that s/he may prepare to make the required alterations. The basic challenges posed to all distance learners include:

Technical Issues
Computer hardware and other devices like printers, modems etc are easily destructible. Just like any other man-made device, even they have the tendency to break down or act up, at times when they are most needed. Apart from device failure, older computers at times are incompatible with some software that are necessitated for online degree programs. Yet another problem is that of viruses, trojans, spyware and other malware infecting a computer, which usually makes a computer unable to function at all. Slow internet connections cause trouble when students wish to log on to their virtual class, retrieve or submit their project etc. These problems cause a lot of frustration for online students and make it hard for them to complete their eLearning assignments at the given time. So what online learners need to do is keep their computers up-dated, run weekly virus checks and acquire a high speed internet connection.

ELearning Requires High Levels of Motivation
Attending a school, may it be a traditional campus or an eLearning class necessitates a particular degree of motivation. When an individual studies at a conventional classroom, s/he gets to communicate with class-fellows, teachers etc, which helps boost their enthusiasm and motivation for learning. But when it comes to studying online, distance learners have rare communication with their online faculty and virtual class-fellows, which gives them a feeling of being isolated. This at times causes lack of motivation making it hard for the student to focus on his/her studies. But, this can be overcome by participating more and more in interactive activities such as posting on the virtual discussion board, getting in touch with class-fellows through live chat, exchanging email addresses etc.

Self-discipline is Necessary
Just like motivation, students need to have good self-discipline if they wish to be successful in their online degree program. The basic attraction of online education is the freedom and flexibility it offers. Students are not required to log in at a particular time from a specific place as they can study whenever it is most convenient for them. But the fact of the matter is that this freedom at times leads to procrastination, which makes an undisciplined student lag behind in his work. So what they need to do is make sure that they take out at least an hour or so everyday to check on projects and complete them on time.

No Verbal Communication
There are numerous classes such as speech, drama, debate, teacher education etc which make it necessary for the student to make verbal presentations in front of their entire class. This does not take place in an online class as students do not gather at a particular time at a specific place. So those who wish to improve their oral skills might have to enroll in a traditional school.

All those interested in continuing their education online must know about these challenges along with several others so they make take steps to ensure that they will have a smooth academic journey after they enroll in an online college or university. All of these challenges can be overcome with a little bit of determination and effort.

The Use of MP3 Players Enhances Distance Education!

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

The benefits of online education have appealed to hundreds and thousands of people across the world, as a result of which the enrollments in distance education courses and online degree programs have increased rapidly. Perhaps the basic factors which appeal individuals into signing up in eLearning programs are the flexibility of time along with remote access to high levels of education. Well an addition has taken place in the list of benefits of online learning – you can now listen to entire books and lectures on your MP3 players!

Now all those who are interested in learning, but do not have the time to attend regular classes can simply grab their MP3 players and download their books or entire classes on it to learn while even being at work! Known as “Learning by Ear”, this trend would help them find that distance education at times presents comfort and efficacy, which can at times not be found in conventional classrooms.

Make Good Use of Your iPod!
A research study conducted by USA Today claims that the number of people who use their MP3’s and iPod’s to listen to educational materials is on the rise, and this is a factor that has been noted by manufacturers of such instruments. So how does this impact the field of distance learning and online education? Well, in simple words, it is an additional way for you to study no matter where you are!

This fact has been realized by academic institutions. What have they done about it? Tidewater Community College in Southeastern Virginia presented around $11,000 grant to its students on the request of Spanish teacher Kathy O’Connor for the students to be able to listen and practice Spanish conversations even when they are not in class.

The expansion of learning by ear helps students access their online degree programs, irrespective of where they are or what they are doing. Online learners now have the ability to class notes or lectures and go through the material while they are in the car, eating out, or simply relaxing at the beach.

ELearning Has the Potential to Safeguard the Future of Our Teenagers

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

With the rise in gas prices and the ever-increasing costs of daily provisions, a vast number of students this year have decided to drop out of school to put up with their finances, while teachers are turning to other professions for better income opportunities. Reaching school on time, attending regular classes and then going to work has caused numerous problems for our teenagers and the only option they find suitable is to drop out of school. This is a problem which can seriously affect the future of our country, hence it requires immediate attention.

Upon realization that drop-out rates are increasing gradually, educators across the nation have decided to turn to online education to secure the future of the teenagers of the United States of America, as well as individuals associated with the field of teaching. For this reason, more and more colleges and universities are now offering accredited distance education courses.

In states such as Mississippi, where people are struggling to maintain a normal lifestyle, merely 17% of citizens are said to have a bachelor’s degree. In this regard, providing online education to the people living in such poverty-ridden states can turn out to be rather helpful. How? Well, first of all comes the fact that distance education programs are rather flexible, so individuals who enroll in online colleges and universities can easily juggle work and education. With the implication of online learning, drop-out rates are expected to lower down, as distance learning would not require students to commute to campus and they can acquire education by simply logging on to the Internet whenever they are free. It is anticipated that students who dropped-out earlier, might go back to school through eLearning and actually graduate!

Secondly, teachers engaged in teaching online classes do not always have to be present at a particular place at fixed timings, so even they can balance their lifestyles and take up other jobs at the same time if they believe that they are not being paid well. This leads us to the fact that teachers across the nation can be available to teach online, which might make up for job opportunities for educators.

It is hoped, by educators and parents across the nation that technological advances such as eLearning would rescue the conventional education system of America and consequently save the future of our teenagers and the nation at large.

We have Something in Common with Them …I am Not Kidding!

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

We Americans are a celebrity obsessed race. Last night I was surfing the internet and found something that will certainly pump you guys up for no reason whatsoever. It’s just that “feel good” factor. When you unexpectedly find yourself having something in common with your favorite celebrity, you feel ecstatic, don’t you? But I don’t, I feel uncomfortable, I blush out of inflated pride (ohh my good God!).
Last night I found out I stand in line with Shaq, Hillary Duff, and Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jennifer Love Hewitt…
Man!
Such cool bits of knowledge genuinely charge me up and make me feel on top of the world, as if I was close to wining an Oscar nomination. I am so inspired, so taken-in by my decision to take the online route for education that I doubled my effort, my hard work to score high so that I can later brag about it. That’s precisely what celebrity syndrome does.

All these shining stars of Hollywood (Shaq included) have spent sometimes of their ultra precious lives as online students at some of the leading online schools in the country , in other words they lived like us (humans, and not stars) for a few hours! I am sure you understand it’s no small achievement for us.

While browsing over the internet, I found out Hilary Duff is studying currently at Harvard Extension School. Arnold the hunk and now the Governor of California finished his Bachelors in International Marketing and Business from Wisconsin-Superior in 1979. And Jennifer Love Hewitt, the Sarah Jeeves of Party of Five at Fox completed her high school through a corresponding course.

I was wondering, what difference did it make to them? Say if Shaquille O’Neil the millionaire slam-dunker had never got himself an online degree, what would have happened? Did it change his life? I don’t think apparently it did. But perhaps there is something he gained out of that ‘piece of paper’ that he claims would solidify his stature as a businessman, which we mortal living hand-to-mouth people would never get to know. We can only guess – bigwigs weave big dreams and make big plans. So there is no point in trying to figure out what they gained out of it, just be happy about the fact we are in the same club!
