Basketball Madness: Michigan State University versus University of North Carolina (UNC)

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

The History

Known as one of the oldest of universities, The Michigan State University was started way back in 1855. The first agricultural college of the country, the Michigan University is best known for its Basketball Team of players. University of North Carolina is one of America’s oldest public universities started in the year 1789. It also has a formidable basketball team.

The Basketball Madness!

A basketball match between the nation’s most historic teams, Michigan State University and University of North Carolina, took place this year between the two teams under the NCAA Division I 2009.

The Home Ground Advantage

The game said to take place at Detroit, Michigan State University certainly has the home court advantage. With a whopping 5000 Spartan fans cheering team after the team had a spectacular victory over the University of Connecticut. 2009 marks the 30th anniversary of the championship between Spartans and Indiana State Sycamores. A historic match which is the most watched of all games till date was won by Michigan State.

Why Victory So Critical For Michigan State?

A victory in this year’s NCAA Division I is definitely needed, in order to boost the morale of the people, who have been through a very hard time due to recession. It has been a real bad time for Michigan State University students. The financial crunch is having its toll with freezes on admissions and tuition fees. The result of freezes and their effectiveness greatly depend upon how much the state governments get from federal relief packages.

How North Carolina Team Stands To Benefit From The Victory?

University of North Carolina also called as The Tar Heels win over Michigan State University is sure to give a positive hope for inhabitants of the university which rather thrives on basketball. There is no question of underestimating the UNC team whose flare for basketball is way beyond just anything else. Well, if you are waiting to see the Franklin Street filled with loads of Carolina – blue body paint, it is all a UNC victory that you need!

Finally the Result!

The story so far is good. What really happened on the 6th of April? The most spoken of matches did take place on the Monday night. The knights of UNC where really storming the ground. Michigan State University did not get any moment to make for the losses. From the very beginning it was clear that Carolina was simply going strong in its services. In short, Spartans never had the chance to see the sunshine, a state battered because of recession, found no reason to smile. Tar Heels took over the show and there was no looking back. UNC’s won every game in double digits. The game was literally over before it begun, the University of North Carolina team was literally more than ready before the Michigan team could even show up. The victory, remember is no fluke, it is just that the Carolina team just did not share the space with Michigan lions

Common College Application Mistakes

Friday, May 8th, 2009

If you are seeking admission to a college, you need to concentrate on the process of admission, documents and procedures. College admission is not an easy task. It takes a lot of work to get admitted to the college of your choice. When filling out the college application, students make several mistakes. Some of the common college application mistakes are discussed below.

Missing Deadlines

The admission process is always filled with deadlines to send all required documents to the college. The greatest blunder made by college students is missing the deadlines. This can prove dangerous to your educational future. If you miss the deadline, it can mean getting a rejection letter or losing financial aid. You have to remember a number of dates like college application deadlines, college financial aid deadlines, federal financial aid deadlines, scholarship deadlines, etc. So, it is advisable to keep a checklist of the deadlines associated with the admission process. As you complete your tasks, check them off. This will make things easier for you to remember.

Admission and Early Decision

Students who are planning to apply for Early Decision must sign a contract states that they are applying to that particular college early. As it is a restricted admission process, students who are not sure whether their chosen college is their first choice, should not go for the Early Decision admission process.

Application Essay and Using the Wrong College Name

During admission, students usually write one application essay and submit the same one to every college, just changing the name. When doing this, students forget to change the college name in every place in the document. Admission officers take note of the lack of attention to detail on your part when you leave the name of some other college in the document.

School Counselors and Online College Admission

The common application form available through the websites of different colleges makes things easier to perform. Students can apply online for the easier steps but they need to notify their high school guidance counselors when they are applying. Some problems that can result from not talking to your counselor includes your transcript being sent out late, the college’s admission decision being delayed and the application remains incomplete because the counselor cannot follow up with the colleges.

Some Major Mistakes

Some major mistakes that are made by students when applying for admission are:

  • Not reading the directions carefully
  • Submitting unrequested documents with the application
  • Using the wrong college address labels
  • Forgetting to sign on all pages
  • Not having the parents sign the application
  • Putting the incorrect contact and address information
  • Putting an informal email address on the application (e.g. hottie246@email.com)
  • Submitting plagiarized essays
  • Forgetting to fill out supplements with the common application form
