Understanding Distance Learning – Can it Eliminate Classroom Bias?

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Distance Learning has so many advantages like

  • Flexibility in learning
  • Easier to study even when you have a full time job
  • No deadlines to meet
  • No fixed location
  • Only requires PC and internet connectivity and
  • The fees are much lesser than that of the on -site counterparts.

Also, nearly all courses on all subjects can also be found in distance learning universities.

Apart from all the above advantages, there is one other special benefit that is not openly apparent. Distance learning removes not only the distance and location barriers but also the barriers of personal biases towards age, sex, race and physical disabilities.

In the real world, these disparities do exist and they affect the lives of many students. We all have heard and experienced teachers favoritism-positively or negatively! Many teachers judge students not on the basis of their knowledge and creativity but on the basis of their race, color, age or physical qualities, but, in online education, there is no scope for such discrimination and open friendships develop. Mails whiz around both sides and all barriers get dissolved. However this also has certain disadvantages.

Students of distance learning live in a false world of security free from any biases. Thus, they are not ready to face the real world. This false sense of security might also reinforce their feelings.

When students take part in extracurricular activities and other social programs, they mingle along with other students and develop wonderful people skills. The opportunity for such things is lost to persons who take up online degree programs. But, all said and done, distance learning helps students to overcome classroom bias and gain a stress-free qualification.

10 Fear Factors While Hiring an Online Graduate

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Online educational programs are being positively preferred by students for the multi various advantages offered by it. Gone are the days when online education was not considered to be an option. Today online graduate studies are posing a problem to traditional campus educational programs. All said and done few fear factor do exist while hiring Online Graduates and they are as follows

Hiring Online Graduates

Students as well as Employers prefer online education pattern considering the advantages it offers to employees, which needs no time off from employment and for employers for having employees who are more knowledgeable and up to date in their career skills.

Gone are the apprehensions about hiring online graduates. While thousands of things are being said about Online Graduates, the reality is that there are certain fear factors because of which organizations are hesitant about hiring Online Graduates.

Top 10 Fear Factors in Hiring an Online Graduate

Listed below are 10 fear factors in hiring Online Graduates

  • Legitimacy – Individuals carry online graduate degree certificates, but how many of us are aware of the legitimacy of the institutes they qualify from. With thousands of institutes available, it becomes hard to verify certain issues and factors.
  • Validity - Students graduating from traditional schools face problems regarding the worth and validity of their educational certifications. Depending on the credibility of the educational institutions their recognition differs. The question of a similar problem arising from Online Institutions and resultant online graduate certification cannot be ruled out.
  • Standard of Education – With diploma mills and other cheap and below standard institutions causing havoc to the entire online educational fraternity, there is a definite doubt about the standard of education offered by them. Whether their course curriculum is a detailed one or simply an eye wash is never known.
  • No Practical Training – All said and done, online education just cannot match up with practical training offered by on campus educational programs. Not all courses are suitable for online learning.
  • Effective Study – No physical assessment, no live monitoring, no control on the study hence there is nothing to substantiate the student’s understanding about the subject and its effectiveness. Hence online graduate qualification does not guarantee knowledge.
  • Fees – While on the face of things one may be tempted to believe that fee structure is comparatively less expensive, in reality it is not always the case. The cost of online education may be a little lesser to traditional campus educational programs. With fees comes up the issue of financing.
  • No all Round Development – College education has a number of other benefits in addition to educational training. Students learn to participate, share, communicate, work in a team, make friends and learn so many other qualities essential for life. Online education, I promise will have none of the above. Even peer group review and interactive online sessions may not offer an online graduate the best of support.
  • Lack of Seriousness – The major drawback of online education is self study. The students should be self motivated to complete the syllabus and achieve the expected results. There is every chance that an online graduate may not do justice to the qualification.
  • Lack of Clarity – A serious concern for online students is that they lack clarity in their concepts. There is nothing like getting your doubts clarified by the professor immediately. This tells on the knowledge and clarity of the online graduate student.
  • No Standard Format – Unlike regular courses, online education even though accredited normally do not follow a similar format. In other words, what is covered under respective graduate, associate or masters degree courses may not be the same. The coverage may differ with the institution. Hence as an employer you should cross check before hiring an Online Graduate.

The above mentioned are fear factors that should be considered before hiring an online graduate. Friends, being students of Online Degree Programs it is your responsibility to look into the above mentioned factors seriously before pursuing for a new job.
