Career Opportunities with a Law Degree

A vast number of colleges and universities across the country now offer law degrees to students interested in the field. Even online institutions involved in eLearning offer online degrees in law to help those who cannot attend regular classes. Career opportunities for those who hold a degree in law are diverse and plentiful. Going to a law school, may it be a traditional campus or an online school, prepares you to think logically, turn into an excellent problem solver and moderator and it further enhances your persuasive writing skills and instructs you to be detail oriented. These skills are helpful in nearly every single profession, particularly the field of law. Graduates of law usually find careers in business, real estate, arts, education, social services and politics etc.

Conventional Careers with a Degree in Law
Conventional careers for lawyers, which are generally taken up by them are inclusive of stepping into a law firm, private practice, law department in a corporation, or government agency.

Private Practice
Lawyers who go into private practice work in a small, medium or large sized firm which consists of a few to about hundreds of lawyers. Small private practice firms usually focus on a particular type of law. On the other hand, large private practice firms take on a large number of lawyers who focus on different areas of law. No matter what the size of the firm is, lawyers begin their career as an associate, or entry level lawyer. As an associate their duties include producing legal documents, writing briefs, researching topic assigned by partners etc. After this step they become a partner and as a partner they not only choose which cases are accepted by the firm, but they also obtain more of the firm’s income.

Government
Lawyers also work at the local, state or the federal level if they decide to enter a government organization. The best part of taking on a government law job is that they can practice any type of law they are familiar with. The most common positions are the District Attorney and Public Defenders, Attorney General and Department of Justice Lawyers.

Corporations
A vast number of lawyers are usually hired by corporations of all types. In such a position they are most likely given a single client to handle and deal with all of his legal issues. Corporate jobs usually make them work less hours with a fixed salary.

Academics
A very small number of lawyers work in law school. Those who decide to work in a law school generally serve as faculty members, specializing in one or more subjects.

Unconventional Careers with a Degree in Law
There are numerous unconventional methods for lawyers to make use of their law degrees. For example, they can join non profit organizations. Considering the fact that law schools of both types, that is a conventional classroom and an online college or university, help students develop persuasive writing skills, graduates can use these skills to attain grants and funding. Their skills are further helpful in jobs such as developmental officers at hospitals, universities and political campaigns. Other unconventional careers which are greatly dependant on problem solving and analytical skills are those of corporate executives, bankers or school administrators.

There is no need to worry about career options considering the vast number of skills that graduates acquire in law school. This degree program trains lawyers to work settings of all kinds, especially settings that are not linked to law.
