Common College Application Mistakes

Friday, May 8th, 2009

If you are seeking admission to a college, you need to concentrate on the process of admission, documents and procedures. College admission is not an easy task. It takes a lot of work to get admitted to the college of your choice. When filling out the college application, students make several mistakes. Some of the common college application mistakes are discussed below.

Missing Deadlines

The admission process is always filled with deadlines to send all required documents to the college. The greatest blunder made by college students is missing the deadlines. This can prove dangerous to your educational future. If you miss the deadline, it can mean getting a rejection letter or losing financial aid. You have to remember a number of dates like college application deadlines, college financial aid deadlines, federal financial aid deadlines, scholarship deadlines, etc. So, it is advisable to keep a checklist of the deadlines associated with the admission process. As you complete your tasks, check them off. This will make things easier for you to remember.

Admission and Early Decision

Students who are planning to apply for Early Decision must sign a contract states that they are applying to that particular college early. As it is a restricted admission process, students who are not sure whether their chosen college is their first choice, should not go for the Early Decision admission process.

Application Essay and Using the Wrong College Name

During admission, students usually write one application essay and submit the same one to every college, just changing the name. When doing this, students forget to change the college name in every place in the document. Admission officers take note of the lack of attention to detail on your part when you leave the name of some other college in the document.

School Counselors and Online College Admission

The common application form available through the websites of different colleges makes things easier to perform. Students can apply online for the easier steps but they need to notify their high school guidance counselors when they are applying. Some problems that can result from not talking to your counselor includes your transcript being sent out late, the college’s admission decision being delayed and the application remains incomplete because the counselor cannot follow up with the colleges.

Some Major Mistakes

Some major mistakes that are made by students when applying for admission are:

  • Not reading the directions carefully
  • Submitting unrequested documents with the application
  • Using the wrong college address labels
  • Forgetting to sign on all pages
  • Not having the parents sign the application
  • Putting the incorrect contact and address information
  • Putting an informal email address on the application (e.g. hottie246@email.com)
  • Submitting plagiarized essays
  • Forgetting to fill out supplements with the common application form
