6 Most Boring Online Degrees to Avoid!

Friday, October 21st, 2011

There are many high quality online degree programs which are offered through online colleges and universities and which can help you to develop a career of your choice or get promotions in your existing job. However, there are a few which are worthless and do not add any value to your career.

Choosing Online Degree Programs

Here are a few pointers to ensure that the online degree chosen by you is such that will be valued by your employers:

  • Choosing an accredited online college or university can add value to your online degree program. In order to receive accreditation, an online college or university should undergo a thorough evaluation which can ensure that the education provided by the college would be of high quality and equivalent to that offered by regular colleges. Accreditation is usually conducted by accreditation agencies.
  • There is no online degree which can be completed on a fast-track. There are many online colleges which claim that the online degree program can be completed quickly. However, these are false claims which lead to fake degrees. The duration of the course should be similar to that of a traditional course.

Some Worthless Online Degrees

  • Journalism is not very useful as the median starting salary in 2009, according to Payscale, was $35,800 which is considered to be quite less as compared to other courses in the field of media. Moreover, the job options are also comparatively lesser.
  • Fine Arts is not very appealing as it does not enable you to earn much. An Online Fine Arts Degree can get you an annual salary of $35,000 as a starting salary. Also there are not much career opportunities with an online degree in this field. You need to have exceptional talent to be able to make a mark for yourself in this highly competitive field.
  • Education is considered as one of the most popular majors based on the figures provided by the National Center for Education Statistics. Due to this, there is fierce competition to get suitable job options. The starting median salary is also low. Also, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, this field has the lowest job offer rates, especially for those with political science, English, foreign language, and history majors. These reasons make an online degree in this field quite worthless.
  • An Online Degree in Religious or Theology Studies has very low career options. This is because unlike other majors which offer various types of jobs, this field does not do so. Moreover, the median salary of $34,700 per year is quite low.
  • Online Musical Therapy also does not offer a wide variety of career options or a high paying salary.
  • Philosophy is not very useful with respect to job options and salary. It becomes effective if added with other areas of specialization which result in better job prospects.

However one needs to remember that an online degree which is considered worthless by some might be considered useful by others. The only reason we have termed the above majors as useless is due to reasons like lesser job prospects, fewer options after graduation, fierce competition or low salaries.
