This indicates the growing shift towards online education as we see a number of online colleges and universities increasing significantly over the years. Most students prefer online education because of the many advantages it offers in comparison to the traditional way of learning. According to figures from The Open University, a high proportion of post-graduate diplomas are now gained via distance methods. There is no single reason for this but the key is undoubtedly the flexibility and time-effectiveness that distance learning offers.

Higher Education is Within Reach

Before the arrival of the Internet people had only one way of learning and pursuing a higher education. However, most people had to put off pursuing a college degree because it simply did not fit into their busy lives and hectic schedule. Today, things have changed significantly and online learning is beginning to be the new way for most working adults to pursue a college degree and continue working at the same time.

The Convenience of Online Education

There are so many online courses and online degree programs available today; there is really no need to attend class on-campus anymore. With online learning you can pursue your degrees in all levels from certificates, diplomas, associates, bachelors, masters and even doctorate degrees from reputable online accredited colleges and universities. And all of this can be done from the comfort of your home or anywhere there is a computer and internet connection.

Benefits of Online Learning

  • Unlimited online access – 24 hours a day seven days a week online access.
  • Quality Faculty – You will learn from experienced professionals with advanced degrees who are experts in their field.
  • High Quality Education – Studies show that online learning is just as effective as the traditional classroom education.
  • Unintimidating discussions – Online learning minimizes discrimination and prejudice that arises naturally in face-to-face settings.
  • Accessibility – You are able to utilize your time effectively and can access your classroom from anywhere in the world.
  • Reduced expenses- Travel expenses completely eliminated, no time spent commuting to and from school and lower tuition than traditional courses.

Online learning is the perfect solution for those who lead busy lives and do not have the time to attend the traditional learning environment. Should I need to be tech savvy for Online Education Programs?

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Are you as comfortable using a computer mouse as you are using a pen? Most of us do not reach that level of comfort around computers until many, many years later. Computers have come a long way. Most of us know very little about computers except to surf the web, check our E-mails and send messages. Really, what else do we need to know about computers?

Why is being Tech Savvy Necessary for Online Education Programs?

Being tech savvy does not mean you need to know how use every single piece of software you may encounter. It could means just having some sort of level of comfort around them and knowing just the basics to get by like; how to open a file, how to save a file, how to use a word processing program, and how to send and receive email.

Do I need to have Computer Skills to Succeed in Online Education?

The answer is no. Even though computers are the standard part of an online education you do not need to be tech savvy to succeed in online education. You need to however, have some basic knowledge of computers, but anyone can succeed in online education without computer skills. Some of the necessary skills you should acquire are: Windows, Word, Email, Internet Explorer and PowerPoint.

Windows is the operating system that Microsoft Office runs on. You need to know Windows so that you know how to maneuver your way around the screen. Knowing Windows will help you to select objects in a document, close or open a program, click and drag objects on a screen, and various other basic computer skills.

Knowing how to use word is also something you should be able to do. Most of the documents that you will be creating for your online education program will be in Word such as, to take notes, write papers, open and type a document, copy-and-paste, select an object and close and save a document. Look at Word as a pen, an eraser and the sheet of paper you use to write your document on. These are essential things that you would normally use just about every day to do most of your assignments in a traditional brick-and-mortar educational environment, but for online learning, Word is all you’ll need.

E-mail is another computer skill that you need to know for your online education. You will need to know how to write an email and how to send it. Knowing how to use your E-mail is extremely important, because this is a tool you can use to communicate privately with your instructor and your fellow classmates.

Surfing the World Wide Web is another computer skill that you need to know in order to be somewhat successful at an online learning institution. You will have to do a fair amount of navigation, so you will need to know how to navigate online from one place to the next by using Internet Explorer, Netscape or some other Internet search program.

You may need to know how to use PowerPoint as well. You may have to do an online class presentation which will require the use of PowerPoint. You never know when you might need to use it in an online class, so be prepared.

Although you do not need to be tech savvy for an online education program, you should at least become familiar with these basic computer skills listed above.

Exam times are stressful, like it or not its human nature. Proper planning well in advance will not stop your heart from pounding. Exams are tough and yes you may fail. Use these 10 tips or not, you still may be doom!

1. Skip Breakfast

Skip breakfast on your exam day

On test day skip breakfast. Yes you usually function better on a full stomach, but on exam day it may just all come back up if you know what I mean. It’s bad enough you may fail, you do not want to have to clean up a mess also.

2. Stress Out

Stress out, panic before your Online Exam

Panic! This is your education on the line and all is hanging on how you do on this exam. Maybe you can put it off to later. Remember how you do on online exams will determine if you can be successful with the online learning process. So not doing well on exams could derail your goals and dreams in life, try to put it off as long as possible.

3. Social Studying

Spend time socializing before Online Exam

Where should you study? Study in front of the TV; if possible invite family and friends over during study time. Make it a pizza party maybe a keg or two kegs! Just think if you can concentrate with all this going on you will do great on the exam.

4. Don’t Sweat What You Do Well

Don't waste time studying before an exam

What do you do best at? Got an answer? Good, now do not worry about that subject. You always do well in that subject so why waste time on it. Now use this extra time you have gained by not going over this subject to do something you enjoy. Something you’ve been putting off because of your online studies. Maybe you could watch a ball game, break out the game console, watch season 3 of the Sopranos marathon style, anything to take your mind of the upcoming exam.

5. Be A Lone Wolf

Try becoming a pro I know it all guy

Do not get help. The Internet is full of a bunch of “know it alls”, who do they think they are? Do not ask your classmates anything or join the class online discussion group. They just want to sponge off your answers let them do their own studying. Remember it’s a dog eat dog world and you got to get yours or the other guy will.

6. Try Cramming

Cram a day before your Online Exam

Cram! and the closer to exam time the better because the information will be fresh in your mind. As a matter of fact do not even bother touching your books until the day before test time. Remember the sooner you start studying the long you’ll have to keep all that stuff in your head.

7. Procrastinate

Prcrastinate, put everything off for deadline

Do not forget about time management. The best way to develop time management skills is to put everything off until just before the deadline. Your mind will work better under the stress and try not to be too organized remember the chaos theory if it works for the universe it should work for you.

8. Forget The Boy Scout Motto

Before the test starts try not to have everything you need. This will help you stall for time and if not it will be a good excuse for why you did so badly.

9. Fake Illness

Fake illness during your online exam

During the exam if you feel you are not doing so well then try faking illness this will help you put the test off. Never mind that this is an online test and no one can see you, this will be great practice for when you flop at your online degree and you start your professional panhandling career.

10. Review

Always ready to complain, protest & sue people

Post test review time! Try to find out what happen, why you did show badly. Start thinking of excuses to make you feel better and that you can tell your friends and family when they find out. Most of all blame others, remember its always someone else’s fault. You are never responsible for anything bad that happens in your life. Remember the four keys to attaining a successful modern urban life;

  • Complain
  • Sue
  • Past the buck, and
  • Lotto tickets

Before taking most of this advice remember that muscle on the floor of the mouth that manipulates food of the author was firmly place in the the area of the face below the eyes and between the nose and the left the ear ;) . Good Luck!
