Online Learning Methods – Which One Suits You Best?

Online education has gained much fame and popularity in the last few years. However, the most important question when considering online education is that how it takes place. Getting an accredited degree from your home, without ever going to camps to attend a class is not small thing. Thus, the question remains – how is online education delivered?

There are several methods of online education and learning for students to choose from, according to their liking and suitability. These learning approaches have been designed so that students pursuing online degrees can pick the one which suits their busy lifestyles best.

Some of the popular online learning methods are:

Synchronous or Live Online Education

In synchronous method of online learning, communication takes place directly between the participants, i.e. the students and the online faculty, which makes it instantaneous and very interactive. The best example of synchronous online learning is that of a virtual classroom or video/audio conferencing where communication between all participants is immediate. The chief characteristic of synchronous learning is that students receive immediate comments on their performance. With instant feedbacks, students grasp an idea as to how they are performing and along with the teachers they can adjust the training to fit in with their needs according to the feedback.

The advanced involvement of all the participants in the learning procedure is what makes synchronous learning so beneficial. Students are provided an environment where they can work together and share their experiences, knowledge etc. Synchronous or live online education also speeds up the creation of study groups, which encourages interaction between online class-fellows and teachers. This helps the participants in understanding their online degree subjects better.

But, like all other things, synchronous learning also has a disadvantage. With this method of education, learning does not remain self-paced for the students as they have to attend online classes at a particular time. What is more is that it requires organization of time as online students usually come from different time zones.

Asynchronous Online Education

With asynchronous method of learning, communication between students and teachers does not take place straight away. Examples of asynchronous learning are: enrollments in a self-paced online program, posting messages on discussion boards and forums, communicating with virtual class-fellows and the online faculty via email etc. This method of learning is convenient, flexible, and basically focuses on self-paced learning at all online degree levels.

However, with all its benefits, asynchronous learning also comes with disadvantages. The online student might feel remote and cut-off from the real campus-based environment. Students at times also do not feel too motivated, given the fact that personal interaction between participants does not take place. Distance learners also do not receive instant feedback on their performances. Consequently, any adjustments or changes required in the learning procedure can only take place after complete assessment, which might take days or even say a week or so.

Blended or Hybrid Learning

This method is an amalgamation of online learning with traditional campus-based education. Students take some lectures in a classroom and participate in campus-based activities like workshops while at the same time learning online via internet based activities such as emails, participation in online forums, assessments, quizzes and notifications.

Nearly all well-known online colleges and universities offer blended/hybrid learning for individuals who study online, but also wish to experience campus-based education. The online faculty sends feedback to the students after assessing their online quizzes and tests. This helps students and teachers identify the areas where the student is deficient and then both the participants come up with a way to get over the lacking.

There are several online learning methods specifically designed to make online learning experience easier for the individuals pursuing online courses. But which online education method is to be taken up for acquiring online degrees is dependant on the lifestyle and preferences of the student along with the benefits it offers!
