Online Learning Revolution – A New Way to Education

Till the last few years, education was confined within the walls of a traditional classroom. But with the onset of technology, this approach has changed completely. Internet has brought an academic revolution that it is now no longer necessary for students and teachers to be present in a “classroom” together to study. This revolution is “online education or distance learning”.

At the same time when certain people are wasting infinite hours over the internet doing things that are in no way any use to them, there are some who are actually putting in efforts and acquiring degrees from online colleges & universities, which show that with each passing day online education is gaining acknowledgement. Students are now flocking onto online degree programs, most of them being nontraditional, adult, professional students who for some reason or the other would never have been able to advance academically had there not been the option of studying online.

Higher education institutions are now presenting numerous online degrees to help out such students (as well as to benefit themselves with the compensations). So is this academic shift positive? Will there be a time when traditional education would be completely taken over by distance learning?

Online Education - A Positive Approach to Learning

Critiques of online education are always pin-pointing certain negativities posed by online education. But from a personal point of view, the benefits of studying online definitely outweigh the negatives. And well, if there are so many disadvantages of online education then why has it been excelling day-by-day with more and more students enrolling in various online colleges & universities?
But then again, there are two sides of every coin. Research surveys have shown that:

  • Some students feel that degrees attained online are not as worthy as those acquired through campus-based learning, meaning that they prefer traditional education.
  • Some people believe that an online lecture through a chat room can never be the same as a face-to-face lecture.
  • People further believe that online learning requires too much patience and students never get to experience the joys and fun of attending college as all they become couch potatoes sitting in front of the computer!
  • But, all of this can be negated by pointing out that:

  • Some of the best universities have moved onto providing education on various online degree levels, which justifies that degrees attained online are as worthy as on-site degrees.
  • Enrollments in online degree programs have increased from 1.98 million to 2.35 million in the span of JUST ONE YEAR, which proves that there is some positive aspect of studying online!!!
  • Why have these enrollments increased? The answer is that professional adults aspire to move forward in their careers and they opt for online degrees as giving up their vocation to go back to school is simply not an option for them with a family to feed and high competition.

So in the end, online education is the on-growing trend which is being considered by one half of the students as a positive shift towards education, but there also exists the other half which believes that online education can never be the same as traditional education. Going through statistics shows an increasing rate of online enrollments, which sometimes gives makes one think if there will be a time when online education will completely take over traditional learning!!!
