Top 8 Military Education Benefits

Monday, January 31st, 2011

There are many military schools in the United States which offer quality education to children of military personnel. It helps in developing their discipline and helps them develop a career either in military or in any other field of their choice. Military education covers not only academics but gives them physical fitness training to help them be more disciplined. If you are serving in military, then you can enroll your children in the age group of 7-12 in elementary military school. A military prep school will help them get ready for a military school.

Important Benefits for Military Education

Military education offers a lot of benefits to the military personnel as well as to their family members. This includes:

1. The Post-9/11 GI Bill and the Montgomery GI Bill, the most common GI Bills, offering military education benefits for active-duty service members, their family members as well as veterans. Post-9/11 GI Bill offers benefits like if you have three years of service after September 10, 2001, you can get 36 months of military education benefits and if you have less than three years of service, then you get a month of benefit for each month served.

2. Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) enables you to be eligible to get upto $1321 a month if you are pursuing higher education as a full-time student. You can also get benefits for other areas like:

  • Technical or Vocational Courses
  • Correspondence Courses
  • Apprenticeship/Job Training
  • Flight Training
  • High‐tech Training
  • Licensing & Certification Tests
  • Entrepreneurship Training
  • Certain Entrance Examinations

3. The amount offered to you as part of MGIB should be used within ten years of leaving active duty. If you are in the Reserves with a six year obligation, then you can opt for MGIB – Selected Reserves which makes you eligible for around $329 monthly.

4. If you are into active duty after 9/11 then you can get additional benefits under the Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP). This depends on the number of days you spend on continuous active duty

5. Apart from the GI Bill, there are other education benefits for service members like Military Tuition Assistance and Tuition Top-Up.

6. If you are in active duty, your family will also get benefits for education like the military family benefits through tuition assistance, grants and scholarships. This can be enjoyed by all kinds of military personnel like active, retired, deceased and POWs.

7. For the spouse of an active military member, it becomes quite tough to manage the changes in the duty location and changes in the educational institutes. Many online classes are available which offer continuity and is much easier. It offers flexibility and accessibility and also helps in getting suitable jobs.

8. Programs like the Career Advancement Accounts are very helpful for military spouses who want to pursue higher education as it takes care of the costs of training and education programs helping them gain a suitable degree.

Thus, if you are in military service, then you and your family members can benefit tremendously in gaining education. Online education helps you further to avoid discontinuity in training.

Attending an Online University – Pros and Cons

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

As working adults with full-time jobs, the only way to earn a degree nowadays is to attend an online university. Trying to figure out how to juggle work and going back to school to earn your degree is no walk in the park, but it’s a step in the right direction. However, before dedicating your time and invest in an online degree, consider the following questions, some are pros and cons to attending an online university.

  1. Can you manage your time effectively? Although classes are online, you will still need to meet the attendance requirements, participate in class discussions and complete assignments on time.
  2. Do you have the extra time to dedicate to online classes? The misconception is that online classes are easier. It will take just as much time and effort to succeed whether it’s online of at a traditional campus site.
  3. Can you express yourself intelligently on paper? Because this is an online format everything you do will have to be in writing. So proper grammar, spelling, punctuation and being able to express yourself in a clear and intelligent manner is essential.
  4. Are you a self-starter? You’re basically on your own when it comes to motivating yourself to get your work done. Because there is no pressure you may tend to slack off on completing your assignments or only do the bare minimum. However, to be successful in the online environment, you will need to be able to push yourself into doing your class work and assignments or you’ll get behind in your work and possibly lose all motivation to get it done and on time.
  5. Do you need constant interaction to function? Collaborating and bonding between instructors and classmates face to face for some students helps to motivate them to do better academically, but this is not the case in an online class. E-mails and chat boards may not do it for you.

There are some real pros to attending an online university

  • You can attend class at 2 am in the morning.
  • Your get to wear your PJs during class.

There are also cons to attending an online university

  • It costs just as much to attend an online university as a traditional university.
  • Technical problem may arise causing you to be late in submitting your assignment on time.
  • You’re pretty much on your own in an online environment.

In Conclusion

Online Universities may not be for everyone, especially if you’re not someone who has the drive and is motivated and determined to get the job done. Traditional universities on the other hand may not work for everyone either. The best solution is to find a middle ground and decide which way is more effective and meets your needs. Overall online universities are an excellent alternative to fit your degree into your busy life. So research the options available to you and decide if attending an online university will offer you more pros than cons. Give it a test run by taking one class at a time and judge for yourself.
