Study Effectively – Your Guide to Success for Online Exams & Beyond!

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Most of us are life-long learners, and studying has become part of our lives. Some people may choose to study for the joy of learning something new. Others may be studying for an exam or for other reasons. But the question is, “Are you studying effectively?” If you did not learn at a young age how to study effectively, chances are you are still wasting your time. Studying should be a learning process, rather than just studying to pass a test.

Here are a few ideas how to make the most of your studying time and study effectively. Consider this your guide to success for online exams and beyond.

Online Exams - Be a part of what you are studying

Read to learn: Most people read their notes or read the textbook without actually learning anything or just a little. Don’t just read – read to learn! Read with the intention to learn something from it. There is no point in reading if your brain isn’t fully awake to retain most of the information. Most of the time simply reading isn’t enough to pass an online exam or exams in general.

Be a part of what you are studying: Engage yourself with the material you are studying by using what you have learned and becoming a part of the experience. For example, if you are reading about how to start a website – try starting a website yourself or instead of just memorizing something – test yourself by writing what you have learned on a piece of paper. Actually engaging yourself in the learning process will help you retain the information and help you study effectively.

Don’t just memorize – memorize with the intent to learn: When you memorize something, you should also practice writing it down. The more you write what you have memorized, the more likely it is to stick! Memorization only stays in your short term memory, but writing it out and memorizing it will place the information in your long term memory.

Test yourself: Take a quiz to see if you really know the information. Testing yourself will give you an idea about what you know and what you still need to work on. Another good idea is to ask a friend or relative to test you using your notes.

Top 7 Ways to Eliminate Cheating in Online Exams

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Online testing is essential for distance education students. But trying to prevent students from cheating in online exams is a difficult task for online instructors. Following are the top 7 ways to eliminate cheating in online exams. How effective these techniques are to prevent cheating online is hard to say, but they do prevent cheating to some extent.

Cheating in Online Exams

Take a look at some strategies uses to prevent cheating or eliminate cheating on online exams altogether.

  1. Create each exam where the questions are not in the same order: This makes it extremely difficult for students to cheat on online quizzes and exams. Students are not able to copy from each other because the questions on the exam are not in the same order. This is an effective technique used to prevent cheating online.
  2. Exams and quizzes with time restrictions: If exams are timed and have just enough time to complete the exam, it makes it very difficult for students to cheat by opening up their text books or reviewing notes, or even looking for answers on the Web. This is another effective method used to eliminate cheaters from cheating.
  3. Create an online quiz that is difficult for others to have access to: Quiz maker services can help prevent cheating on online examinations. For example, they ensure that students can only have access to their quizzes if their user ID and password, domain limit online access and online access control.
  4. Make each question different: This is a difficult task but one that is effective. Creating an exam where all the questions on each exam is different and have different answers to choose from is a full-proof way of preventing cheating among students.
  5. Assign a specific test taking location where students live: Have a place, such as a high school, business, or government agency where students have to go in order to take exams. This will eliminate cheating in online exams.
  6. Have individual test taking schedule for each student: Each student is given a specific time to take the test. This is not the best strategy, but it is worth a try.
Cheating in exams is nothing new. Students do it all the time. Whether it is online or offline, instructors always have to stay on top of what is going on in the classroom and try different ways to eliminate cheating which is not an easy task especially in an online classroom. These 7 ways to eliminate cheating in online exams are not fool-proof but they do help to prevent cheating to some extent.

Online Examination – Not an easy job for Cheaters

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Are online examinations easier or harder for cheaters? It is actually much easier for students to cheat online than on-campus. Why? Well the answers are many. However, cheating is common both in an online environment and offline. Cheating on exams is nothing new and students will cheat. Students are always one step ahead of the game and will find a way to cheat if they have to even if it is difficult to do.

Creativity can Prevent Cheating in Online Exams

Students are very creative when it comes to cheating. Online teachers are still behind in some of the strategies used to cheat in their classrooms. This is what makes cheating so easy. In order for online instructors to beat students at their own game they will have to be just as creative.

Preventing Cheating in an Online Classroom

A good online exam is one that is created to test students’ knowledge and to prevent students from cheating. When exams are designed in such a way, it is extremely difficult for students to cheat whether online or on campus. So online teachers need to be just as creative when designing exams and always keep students guessing which test taking strategy they will be using for each test. Staying one step ahead of students is the key to eliminating cheating online.

Here is why online examinations may not be an easy job for cheaters:

  • Each exam may have questions place in different orders.
  • Exams and quizzes may have set time limits.
  • Online exams are designed in such a way that it is difficult for others to have access to.
  • Each question may be different.
  • Test taking location is assigned to each student in their hometown.
  • Each student may have different test taking schedules.

Cheating in online examinations may not be an easy job for Cheaters, but it is definitely not Impossible to do so.

10 tips NOT to succeed in Online Exams

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Exam times are stressful, like it or not its human nature. Proper planning well in advance will not stop your heart from pounding. Exams are tough and yes you may fail. Use these 10 tips or not, you still may be doom!

1. Skip Breakfast

Skip breakfast on your exam day

On test day skip breakfast. Yes you usually function better on a full stomach, but on exam day it may just all come back up if you know what I mean. It’s bad enough you may fail, you do not want to have to clean up a mess also.

2. Stress Out

Stress out, panic before your Online Exam

Panic! This is your education on the line and all is hanging on how you do on this exam. Maybe you can put it off to later. Remember how you do on online exams will determine if you can be successful with the online learning process. So not doing well on exams could derail your goals and dreams in life, try to put it off as long as possible.

3. Social Studying

Spend time socializing before Online Exam

Where should you study? Study in front of the TV; if possible invite family and friends over during study time. Make it a pizza party maybe a keg or two kegs! Just think if you can concentrate with all this going on you will do great on the exam.

4. Don’t Sweat What You Do Well

Don't waste time studying before an exam

What do you do best at? Got an answer? Good, now do not worry about that subject. You always do well in that subject so why waste time on it. Now use this extra time you have gained by not going over this subject to do something you enjoy. Something you’ve been putting off because of your online studies. Maybe you could watch a ball game, break out the game console, watch season 3 of the Sopranos marathon style, anything to take your mind of the upcoming exam.

5. Be A Lone Wolf

Try becoming a pro I know it all guy

Do not get help. The Internet is full of a bunch of “know it alls”, who do they think they are? Do not ask your classmates anything or join the class online discussion group. They just want to sponge off your answers let them do their own studying. Remember it’s a dog eat dog world and you got to get yours or the other guy will.

6. Try Cramming

Cram a day before your Online Exam

Cram! and the closer to exam time the better because the information will be fresh in your mind. As a matter of fact do not even bother touching your books until the day before test time. Remember the sooner you start studying the long you’ll have to keep all that stuff in your head.

7. Procrastinate

Prcrastinate, put everything off for deadline

Do not forget about time management. The best way to develop time management skills is to put everything off until just before the deadline. Your mind will work better under the stress and try not to be too organized remember the chaos theory if it works for the universe it should work for you.

8. Forget The Boy Scout Motto

Before the test starts try not to have everything you need. This will help you stall for time and if not it will be a good excuse for why you did so badly.

9. Fake Illness

Fake illness during your online exam

During the exam if you feel you are not doing so well then try faking illness this will help you put the test off. Never mind that this is an online test and no one can see you, this will be great practice for when you flop at your online degree and you start your professional panhandling career.

10. Review

Always ready to complain, protest & sue people

Post test review time! Try to find out what happen, why you did show badly. Start thinking of excuses to make you feel better and that you can tell your friends and family when they find out. Most of all blame others, remember its always someone else’s fault. You are never responsible for anything bad that happens in your life. Remember the four keys to attaining a successful modern urban life;

  • Complain
  • Sue
  • Past the buck, and
  • Lotto tickets

Before taking most of this advice remember that muscle on the floor of the mouth that manipulates food of the author was firmly place in the the area of the face below the eyes and between the nose and the left the ear ;) . Good Luck!
