Common College Application Form – 10 Best Tips

Monday, June 1st, 2009

When seeking admission in a college, students should focus on the application form. The application form may be a specific one prepared by the college authority or a common application form, which is a uniform application form and is accepted by 257 colleges in the United States. Officially, colleges do not have any preference for specific or common application form but there is still some bias towards students who fill out the college-specific form. There are many important tips for processing the common college application form and the 10 best tips are discussed below.

10 Best Tips

  1. Some schools use a common application form but they colleges have supplemental application forms apart from the common one and want students to fill in the details of the supplemental forms.
  2. Before beginning, students must go through the entire form and get the list of documents needed and the fields to be filled. As the common application form is quite long, students need to dedicate sufficient time when filling out the form.
  3. Students who submit the common application form must print out the form and see how it looks on paper. Some parts of the application often get cut off in the printing process by the college authority so you need to be sure nothing important gets lost.
  4. As students will use the same common application form to apply on different colleges, they must keep copies of their applications and proofread them before submitting because once the application is submitted, there is no chance to edit.
  5. If students are planning to apply Early Decision, they must check the respective college’s form for the Early Decision affidavit. This may go with the common application form the student will submit or students may have to submit an additional letter to the college admission authority for consideration.
  6. Students must prepare personal statements. Personal statements are appreciated by college admission authorities because they serve as an easy way to get to know students. Personal statements include interests, ideals, hopes, experiences, extracurricular activities, etc.
  7. Students must submit their recommendation letters and high school forms to their respective teachers as early as possible. They must also check with their chosen colleges as to how many letters of recommendation are required by them.
  8. Some colleges ask for SAT and ACT exam scores. These standardized test scores help the college admission authorities judge the academic abilities of the students.
  9. Students who are planning to apply online using common application forms must download and print a transcript request form. This form is brought to the counseling office for completion and is sent to respective colleges.
  10. Students must meet the deadlines for submitting the application to each college. Missing deadlines ruins the student’s chance of getting accepted.

Monday, May 18th, 2009

If you want to make a career in the field of online teaching, it is quite important that you get a right kind of training. As online teaching is completely different from other forms of teaching, you must know about all the intricacies that are associated with it.

How Online Teaching Is Different From Other Forms Of Teaching?

When teaching in an online environment, you need to have a thorough knowledge of computer and all the latest software as online classes is conducted through internet. In online classes, there is no personal interaction between teachers and the students. Therefore, the task of teaching for online degree is lot tougher.

To make sure that students understand things properly, online teachers need to repeat things two or three times in online classes. This is totally different from a traditional classroom setup where after finishing the lecture, teacher will ask whole class if there is any confusion in the mind of students regarding lecture. If there are no queries from students, teacher will move on to next topic. Online teachers need to evaluate the progress chart of every student on a regular basis. This is not the case in a traditional classroom setup where the main job of teachers is to complete the syllabus on a preset time so that students are ready for their final examination. Still if you are not happy with teaching methodologies, you can request for another teacher.

Academic Qualification

To make your mark in the field of online teaching, you need to be academically qualified. Masters or PhD degree in subject you are interested in teaching is an absolute must. Further, you must possess certificate in teaching. To get entry level job in the field of teaching, make sure that you earn degree from an accredited university.

Experience

You will only be able to attain success in the field of teaching through Online Education when you gain experience. As your work experience increases, you will start feeling comfortable in your skills. More importantly, you will get an idea of which teaching methodologies are working for you and how you can improve your teaching methodologies. When teaching in an online environment, you need to be innovative rather than just following the conventional routines. Do not copy teaching routines of other teachers because if a particular teaching methodology is proving successful for one teacher, it does not mean that it is going to be successful for you as well.

Interact with your students regularly because they are the one who will give you a clear idea of your strengths and weaknesses. There are number of online teachers who do not like a feedback of their students with regard to teaching methodologies. If you are one of those, get rid of this habit because it can have a negative impact on your career. The average salary of online teachers is normally less than teachers that are teaching in traditional colleges and universities but with more and more students now opting for online education, this situation is going to improve in the coming years.
